What Are Clouds?

What Are Clouds? While it is true that clouds contain water, they are actually not formed by water vapor. If so, you would not have been able to see them. The water that forms clouds is liquid or ice. The surrounding air is in part composed of invisible water vapor. It is only when that water vapor cools and condenses into liquid water droplets or solid ice crystals that the visible clouds form.

So how does that water get to the sky? Think of water on the surface of the earth - that means oceans, lakes, and streams but also the soil and even the droplets and ponds that accumulate on leaves, buildings and rocks. Remember that water is made up of tiny particles and that those particles move.
