What Is Farming In Geography

Image
The first domesticated animals were dogs, which were used for hunting. Sheep and goats are probably bred next. The people also had cattle and pigs. Most of these animals were once hunted for hides and skins. Many of them are now a source of milk, cheese, and butter. Finally, people use pets such as oxen to plow, pull and transport. Agriculture enables people to produce more food. They could use this extra food when the plants failed or trade for other goods. Food scraps allowed people to work in other non-agricultural activities. Agriculture kept nomadic people close to their fields and led to the development of permanent villages. This was compounded by trade. The new economies were so successful in some areas that cities grew and civilized. Early civilization-based civilizations developed along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Mesopotamia (now Iraq and Iran) and along the Nile River in Egypt.
