The model builds on the concept of continental drift, a concept developed during the early decades of the 20th century. Plate tectonics was generally accepted by geoscience scientists after confirmation of underwater distribution in the mid to late 1960s. The earth’s lithosphere, which is the solid outer shell of the planet (the crust and outer layer), is divided into seven or eight large plates (depending on how they are described) and many smaller plates.
